Authentic insight into the history of Alexandria, this is a monumental ancient city of power in ancient times. Once the capital of Egypt, Alexandria was the central base of Greco-Roman power ruled by Alexander the Great.
Many ancient sites still exist in the city, giving you the wonderful opportunity to visit these important locations. The 15th-century Citadel of Qaitbay, ancient Catacombs deep underground, and historical Alexandria Bibliotheca is hosting ancient scripts and historical books.
After your breakfast on the Cruise ship, you will be collected by our Tour Guide from the Port in Alexandria to explore this incredible city.
Then you will be driven by comfortable vehicle to your first visit of the day to the pretty Citadel of Qaitbay, the original 15th-century fortress on the banks of the Mediterranean Sea, which was a lookout post by Roman soldiers against invaders sailing towards Egypt to attack Alexandria. Time to explore the fortress with a spectacular photo opportunity from the top across the Mediterranean and the city.
Next, you will move on to visit the Catacombs known as Kom El Shoqafa. Here you will learn about the unusual history of the tombs and burials, which cover different periods from Pharaohs to Greek and Roman times. Interestingly, you will see how these cultures merged in times of death with a mix of pharaonic images and Greco - Roman merging.
Next, a relaxing lunch will serve in a local restaurant with time to browse the local souvenir shops and take in the views of this bustling and vibrant city.
Your last visit of the day will be to the famous Alexandria Bibliotheca, a huge Library situated on the site of the old Roman Library, which tragically burnt down during an invasion by the army of Julius Caesar in revenge for a failed attack by sea by Egyptian forces. Today, the Library has millions of important books, many of which were donated by the French. Sadly, only a few valuable books from Greco-Roman times survived the fire. Today, the Library is frequented by students studying many subjects from history to modern trades.
Finally, you will return to your Cruise Ship at Alexandria Port.
